In the morning of September 17, Mr. Nguyen The Phuoc - Member of the Provincial Party Standing Committee, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee received and worked with the Swiss Government's delegation of experts assessing the damage caused by typoon 3 who came to work in Yen Bai province to assess the needs in the areas of clean water, sanitation, housing and advice on mitigating the risks of floods and landslides in the province.
At the meeting, Mr. Nguyen The Phuoc, Standing Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, said: Due to the impact of storm No. 3, Yen Bai province suffered very heavy damage with 54 people dead and missing, about 30,000 houses flooded and landslides, affecting over 100,000 people.
Storm No. 3 has caused severe damage to infrastructure systems such as electricity, roads, schools, stations, and irrigation works. Nearly 5,000 hectares of agriculture have been affected. This is a very large natural disaster, exceeding historical flood levels. Yen Bai provincial authorities and people have focused on prevention to minimize damage caused by natural disasters. Currently, the province is implementing many measures to quickly stabilize people's lives.
The Standing Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee also said: Currently, Yen Bai has many households located in areas at high risk of landslides. The province hopes to receive support in terms of equipment, materials as well as experience in responding to natural disasters from the expert team.
Speaking at the working session, the Swiss Government's expert delegation was very impressed with Yen Bai province's measures to respond to and overcome the consequences of natural disasters. The delegation said that they could support people in areas affected by storms and floods with clean water containers, instruct people on how to effectively use water containers, treat wells after flooding for people, support tents in case of natural disasters. The delegation also hoped that Yen Bai province would create conditions for them to conduct field surveys, grasp the damage situation as well as the needs of the people in order to provide timely and effective support.
