Van Yen is the biggest district in Yen Bai province with 26 communes and a town. The district has population of 120 thousand people with 11 ethnic groups living together. The district is 40 km from the provincial center, over 200 Km from Hanoi capital and over 140 Km from Lao Cai province.

Van Yen has a convenient transportation system including road, railway and waterway, linking regions of the province and the neighboring provinces. Especially Hanoi - Lao Cai - Kunming (China) Expressway runs through the areas of 08 communes, with a length of over 50 kilometers, there are two paths linking to the Expressway with 2 bridges over the Red River in urban areas: Mau A town let and Trai Hut township (An Binh commune). Van Yen has  a national level Northern Van Yen industrial zone located along the road Yen Bai - Khe Sang and Noi Bai - Lao Cai Expressway about 05 km. In addition, Van Yen district has 02 industrial clusters: Industrial Cluster in the west of Mau A bridge with the area of 85 ha and industrial cluster in Toan An village, Dong An commune with an area of ​​30 ha. Van Yen is also known as home of the cinnamon tree. Vast area of cinnamon with nearly 20 thousand hectares stretching from Dai Son to Mo Vang, from Tan Hop to Phong Du Ha, Xuan Tam ...
