YBP - With nearly 20 ethnic groups living in 24 communes and towns, the people in Luc Yen have a traditional culture imbued with their own identity, which is traditional Tet, including the Dao Do. Although there have been many changes over time, those cultural beauties still preserve over the years.
The Dao Do in Luc Yen accounts for about 18% of the district's population, concentrating mainly in Khai Trung, Phuc Loi and Trung Tam communes. On the traditional New Year, Dao Do people also worship Ong Cong, Ong Tao like the Kinh people, but they are not offered on December 23 (lunar year), they are offered together with the ancestor worshiping ceremony. These days, the whole family cleans houses, gardens and prepares food and foodstuffs for Tet holidays, all jobs must be done before 30th day of the last month. The offerings for the year of the year are paid special attention by the Dao Do people here, in addition to banh chung, banh gu, pork, chicken, wine ..., there is also a plate of “banh day” or “banh nep” wrapped in “chit” leaves and votive money. The Dao do not do the ceremony themselves but invite the monk, or the prestigious elders in the community, to go home to celebrate. After the year-end meal, everyone in the family has to clean up with the water boiled with some aromatic leaves and roots, then wears the new and most beautiful traditional costumes to receive New Year's Eve. In New Year's Eve, the Dao Do do not leave the house but gathere together to wait for the new year to wish the age and luck for each other. In the morning of the first day of the Lunar New Year, everyone gets up early, prepares a decent meal to celebrate the new year. There is also the practice of land-breaking like the Kinh people, but the Dao Do welcome the house-breakers with 6 cups of wine. The Dao Do pay special attention to the choice of time and the direction of the beginning of the year. From the afternoon of 30 Lunar New Year, after choosing the time and direction for departure with their family, the Dao Do prepare a bouquet of fresh flowers, usually peach blossom or apricot blossom, and plum flowers put on the way in the direction of departure in the next morning. In the morning of the first morning, all family members have to bring a votive money to burn immediately when leaving the house with the idea of burning all risks and bad luck. On the way home, the landlord will take the bouquet the previous day and pick up some small stones with the idea of symbolizing wealth, money, flowers symbolizing the proliferation in the new year.
In the New Year days, after going to wish the new year to the people in their neighbors, the young and old, and the boys and girls flock to the community house. Here, the older people together revise the tradition and cultural customs and identity of their people, the young sing, dance, play games ... Especially, this is also an opportunity for Dao boys and girls to meet, learn and talk to each other through love songs. The Dao Do also have a custom of burning votive money like the Kinh, after choosing a good day, they prepare a tray of offerings to see off the dead. After that, each family prepares a tray of offerings to worship the village. At the village communal house, the most prestigious shaman is assigned the responsibility of making offerings to each house, then a common worshiping ceremony for the whole village. After this ceremony, all people participate in cultural, art and sport activities ... When they have finished playing, they will take knives, hoes, the civet, the rake to sharpen, re-check the handle to the field, come out with enthusiasm and hope a new year is full, warm.
