Yên Bái province has made significant strides toward alleviating poverty through its innovative housing programs, focused on providing stable housing for its most vulnerable citizens.
For many families, the dream of owning a solid home is often overshadowed by harsh economic realities. Yet, thanks to the support from both the government and charitable initiatives, many are now witnessing their aspirations come to life. Under the housing assistance project announced by the Yên Bái Provincial People's Committee, over 3,000 households are expected to benefit from new housing by the end of 2025.
The Trạm Tấu district has emerged as one of the key areas, with projections for 386 households to receive assistance during 2024 alone. From this total, 285 homes will be newly constructed, and 101 will undergo necessary repairs, with funding exceeding 20 billion VND allocated for this effort.
One such family is led by Thào A Chú, belonging to the Hmong ethnic group and residing in the Háng Tây village of Pá Lau. With five family members, their income primarily relies on agriculture and other labor, which severely limited their ability to dream of anything but basic shelter. "Before I never imagined my family could have such a beautiful house. Now with this new place, I feel secure because I can work far away without worrying about my wife and kids at home," Chú expressed thoughtfully. His heartfelt gratitude extends to local officials and the province, who have transformed his long-held dreams of home ownership.
According to Giàng A Su, Vice Chairman of the Pá Lau People's Committee, this mountain community faces significant hardships, with nearly 60% of households classified as impoverished. The current housing initiative is seen as pivotal, providing the necessary resources to finally eliminate substandard housing conditions. Throughout 2024, their focus is to replace 46 deteriorated structures, promising families like Chú's access to stable frameworks for housing.
Similarly, the Túc Đán commune plans to address 72 homes, fueled by both government support and the commitment of local volunteers. Party Secretary Thào A Tàng described the fierce commitment to meeting these housing goals, emphasizing community collaboration and engagement. This drive includes mobilizing hundreds of workdays dedicated to transporting materials and assisting with home construction.
The overarching theme of these initiatives emphasizes addressing the roots of poverty through sustainable living conditions. With support from various community members and government bodies, Yên Bái has initiated solutions to tackle widespread housing insufficiency. Successful completion of these homes is expected to bolster overall living conditions, enabling vulnerable populations to focus on opportunities for sustainable growth rather than merely surviving.
The provincial government has executed rigorous plans to augment the housing assistance project alongside contributions from diverse sources, including private sectors and social enterprises. The initiative aims to eliminate 2,351 new homes and offer 671 repair projects, targeting nearly 148.9 billion VND throughout its duration.
Remarkably, this effort has already delivered 2,995 homes as of now, with projections aiming to fulfill the entire goal by before the end of December 2024.
This vibrant collective effort not only seeks to provide bricks and mortar but also hopes to lay the foundation for empowerment. "The overarching aim of this initiative is to reinforce stability for those living under poverty, offering them the chance to expand their horizons for self-sufficiency," shared Vũ Thị Hiền Hạnh, Vice Chair of the provincial administration.
The excellent work being conducted by local governments and communities serves as proof of what can be conquered and achieved when focus turns to fostering basic dignity through secure housing. If successful, the end of 2025 should see Yên Bái emerge with less dilapidated housing, improved living standards, and, most significantly, dreams of self-sufficiency realized for its residents. This combined effort signifies not merely building homes but nurturing hopes for generations to come.
