Mr. Le Trong Quang - Vice Chairman of Vietnam Macadamia Association reported the results of development of Macadamia trees in Vietnam
Macadamia trees have been brought to Vietnam since the 1990s. After a period of experimentation, Macadamia trees have been shown to grow, develop well, give high yields and bring about economic benefits in places with suitable climate and land conditions. Up to now, the whole country has 26 Macadam seed production and trading establishments, concentrated mainly in the Northwest and Central Highlands. Nationwide, 23 provinces have planted Macadamia with an area of about 16,400 ha; estimated nationwide harvested output in 2020 will be about 5,300 tons of fresh seeds. The time of planting is mainly from 2016 to 2020. The planting area tends to increase over the years due to the ease of planting, broad market and higher economic efficiency compared to other crops.
The whole Yen Bai province now has about 80 hectares of Macadamia trees, scatteredly planted in Van Chan, Tran Yen and Luc Yen districts. However, these areas are mostly spontaneous planting among people. In order to expand the area of macadamia plantation, through the survey, the Vietnam Macadamia Association assessed that Yen Bai is a province with many potentials and suitable climate to grow macadamia trees, the area that can be planted macadamia over 1,400 ha, mainly concentrated in the districts of Tram Tau, Van Chan and Mu Cang Chai. At present, the Association is studying and proposing the implementation of intercropping of macadamia with tea in Yen Bai province, in which it is expected to test 5 hectares of Macadamia and tea in Van Chan district.
At the meeting, participants focused on sharing experiences of Macadamia planting in the country; Discuss conditions for macadamia development in Yen Bai province.
Mr. Do Duc Duy - Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee spoke at the conclusion of the meeting
Speaking at the conclusion of the meeting, Mr. Do Duc Duy - Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee welcomed and highly appreciated the Vietnam Macadamia Association for surveying, researching and proposing macadamia trees development plan in Yen Bai province. He thought that macadamia trees with high economic value can grow a variety of models and needs the attention and research to develop in the country in general and in the North West region in particular, including Yen Bai province. However, the plantation of this tree also has strict requirements on climate, soil, technical solutions (seed selection, planting techniques, tending, preserving after harvest). Besides, the product consumption market is still facing many difficulties, high initial investment capital, requiring a lot of labor when harvesting products ... Therefore, Mr. Do Duc Duy agreed on the study of experimental planting, proceeding to develop and expand the models of macadamia planting in Yen Bai province. Experimental roadmap is 3-5 years with the scale of 10-15ha. The development of macadamia trees must link with the value chain, towards the development of clean agriculture and organic agriculture. It is necessary to study effective models in adjacent localities to apply to Yen Bai. It needs to research and develop both pure and intercropping models; choose different varieties with different terrain and soil conditions. The experimental planting is prioritized in the western and upland areas of Luc Yen district. It is necessary to choose to apply the most suitable, proven and effective technical solutions at the testing models.
Mr. Do Duc Duy, the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee assigned the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to coordinate with localities to develop a plan for experimental development of macadamia trees in the province. He hoped that the Vietnam Macadamia Association would accompany Yen Bai province in the process of technical development; support technical solutions from seedlings, tending, harvesting to product consumption.
