YBP - On the morning of October 15, the People's Committee of Van Yen district held a scientific conference to improve the value and brand of Van Yen cinnamon.
In Yen Bai province, the total area of cinnamon is about 81,000 hectares; the output of cinnamon bark exploitation is over 18,000 tons; cinnamon wood is over 200,000 m3; the output of branches and leaves of cinnamon is over 85,500 tons.
Particularly in Van Yen District, the cinnamon growing area is about 52,000 ha, which has been planted for a long time, associated with the life of the Dao people in Vien Son commune. Van Yen district still has a temple to worship the ancestors of the cinnamon tree. During the years of subsidy, Van Yen's cinnamon products were purchased by the state to exported to the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.
From the 2000s up to now, the cinnamon tree has grown strongly in the district. Cinnamon has really become a rich tree for Van Yen people. Up to now, cinnamon trees have been present in 25 communes and towns with a total area of over 52,000 hectares, accounting for about 40% of the natural land area and 50% of the district's forestry land area. Every year, Van Yen cinnamon provides the market with over 6,000 tons of dried cinnamon bark, over 60,000 tons of branches and leaves, 300 tons of essential oil, over 50,000 m3 of cinnamon wood, over 150 million cinnamon trees and many other products from cinnamon such as cinnamon tea, cinnamon handicrafts, bringing in nearly VND1,000 billion in revenue for people. Cinnamon trees have created stable income for over 19,000 households directly growing Cinnamon and thousands of businesses, cooperatives, households processing and trading cinnamon products.
Van Yen cinnamon tree has been granted a geographical indication by the National Office of Intellectual Property in 2010, granted a certification mark in 2020; Instruction Van Yen cinnamon has also been recognized by the National Office of Intellectual Property of Thailand in 2014. Currently, Van Yen cinnamon has over 6,000 hectares which are certified organic according to EU and US standards; 16 cinnamon products are recognized as OCOP products; Van Yen cinnamon has been present in over 30 countries and territories.
