Within the framework of the Mau Thuong Ngan (Mother Goddess of Forest) Worship Festival and the Dong Cuong Temple New Rice Festival in 2023, the People's Committee of Van Yen district organised the first Chau van ritual singing contest themed "Sacred Motherland" in Dong Cuong commune.
The event attracted the participation of 20 singers from Dong Cuong commune, and Lao Cai, Hung Yen, Nam Dinh and Tuyen Quang provinces, and Hanoi.
Through forms of expression, dance movements, music, lyrics and performances, the singers expressed human’s wishes and aspirations, and lauded the merits of historical figures who made contributions to the nation, thus demonstrating the significance of the ritual singing of meeting people's daily needs and aspirations, which are praying for wealth, fortune, health, and peace for the country and people.
The organising board presented the first prize to Tran Dinh Huy from Nam Dinh city, and two second prizes to Do Duc Thien from Hung Yen province and Hoang Ngoc Anh from Dong Cuong commune. There were also three third and 15 consolation prizes.
The contest aimed to preserve and promote the value of the Worship of Mother Goddess, UNESCO-recognised intangible cultural heritage; and honour and promote the artistic values of the Chau van ritual singing. It offered a chance for artisans and artists to meet and exchange experiences, and to popularise to the public and tourists the intangible cultural heritage of localities nationwide.
